This is for a sealed 2005-06 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey hobby box. The box contains 24 packs of eight cards. There are six Young Guns per box. Some info from Cardboard Connection on Series 1 and 2. When it comes to pure, old-fashioned set building, 2005-06 Upper Deck Hockey is one of the sport’s greatest modern sets. The slick look is the start, but that has been a common trait of virtually all flagship Upper Deck sets over the years. It’s the checklist that propels this one to such heights, both in intrigue and value. Split between two series, the base set chimes in at 487 cards, 242 for Series 1 and 245 for Series 2. Released following the 2004-05 labor dispute, the result was two years worth of Young Guns rookie cards, either of which would have made for a stellar lineup on their own. Much of the attention in Series 1 comes from Sidney Crosby, and rightfully so. But there’s also Henrik Lundqvist, Corey Perry and 2015 Conn Smythe winner Duncan Keith, to name a few. Series 2 Young Guns don’t let up much either. It kicks off with Alexander Ovechkin. He’s joined by Ryan Getzlaf and Thomas Vanek. Needless to say, base sets don’t get much stronger than this. Young Guns land 1:4 hobby packs so they’re short prints but not to the extremes that a lot of products have. In a collecting landscape that has lots of niches and preferences, these appeal to many different types. Set builders have a realistic end point. Rookie card collectors have something that holds value. Team and player collectors get something that looks strong and, while more expensive than an entry-level product, is still somewhat affordable. This culminates in a product that has broad appeal still today. Base cards have two parallels. High Gloss have just ten copies each. There are also Masterpieces Printing Plates. Memorabilia cards are inserted three per hobby box in both Series 1 and Series 2. Among these are the over-sized Big Playmakers (Series 1) and Majestic Marks (Series 2), both of which are numbered to 50. While there are some, autographs aren’t a major focus in 2005-06 Upper Deck Hockey. Series 1 has Notable Numbers, a large 180-card set that has staggered serial numbering that is based on the player’s jersey number. First-year players have signatures in Series 2 with Rookie Ink, which has similar numbering based on jerseys, and Rookie Threads Autographs (#/75). Given the strength of the product, box priced have remained strong over the years. Series 1 in particular is considered a modern classic. With so many strong rookies, hobby boxes now sell for a few hundred dollars. Series 2 is significantly cheaper even though the Ovechkin is still one of the most popular Young Guns.
